In celebration of another harvest coming to a close, we asked Michael Mooney, Owner and Winemaker at Chateau Margene to share his thoughts on this year’s vintage.
2016 Harvest Report – Michael Mooney
Our 2016 harvest began early (Sep. 8th), having slightly less than average yields with grape chemistry and flavors that were exceptionally well balanced. From July through September we had an even growing season with temperatures that were cooler than average during the day and our typical cool nights. The long heat spikes we sometimes get did not materialize, so the grapes moved through beautifully and were in great condition at harvest. The much anticipated “El Nino” did not live up to expectations, but rainfall was much better than the four previous drought years and close to the 8” historical averages in Paso Robles.
Our Cabernet Sauvignon grapes come from four different AVA’s in Paso Robles (Creston, Adelaida, Paso Robles Estrella & Geneseo). Due to the consistent weather, we were able to pick each block at perfect ripeness, which will allow us to really showcase that particular vineyards terroir. Across the board, the fruit showed typical red and dark berry fruit, with great color, structure and flavor. We are seeing a balance of intensity and elegance that, in 2018, will make the blending of our Cabernets a pleasure.
